The bookcase was the lower section of  larger piece but this was the only part remaining. Brought at auction it was virtually ready to be scrapped. The top had several sections of end grain wood where the upper part had been attached and these created further problems. With the old ply top some thought had to be made on how to approach it’s restoration. It was decided that the best option would be to ebonise the top.

The top was veneered in a thin ply. The bookcase was then polished to reveal a walnut veneer on the sides. The new top was then ebonised and ebonised detailing added to the shelf fronts and plinth.
